CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is taking part on Monday in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit being held in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. The summit is taking place on August 31 and September 1 and includes the SCO’s 10 member countries. Issues such as regional security, terrorism, trade, energy and connectivity are expected to be discussed.
Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two leaders are likely to discuss India-Russia relations, economic cooperation, energy, trade and issues related to regional security. The meeting comes at a time when global geopolitical conditions are changing rapidly.
Prime Minister Modi is also likely to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping. There will be particular attention on the possible talks between the two leaders, as efforts have been under way for some time to bring stability to India-China relations.
The crisis in West Asia is also expected to be an important issue at the SCO summit. Iran is a member of the SCO, and the ongoing conflict in the region is affecting energy security, trade and maritime connectivity. In this context, discussion on the situation in West Asia will be strategically important for India.
India has consistently prioritised cooperation against terrorism, separatism and extremism on the SCO platform. In addition, expanding connectivity, trade and energy cooperation with Central Asia is also among India’s key priorities.
