Modi’s call to Pawar stirs Maharashtra political speculation over Supriya Sule

Mumbai. A phone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) president Sharad Pawar has triggered fresh discussion in Maharashtra politics. The Prime Minister called Sharad Pawar on November 4 to ask about his health and advised him to take complete rest. During the conversation, he referred to Pawar’s daughter and MP Supriya Sule, saying that Supriya is now ready and that they would together shoulder the country’s responsibility.

According to Sharad Pawar’s close associate Vitthal Maniyar, the Prime Minister told Pawar during the conversation to focus on his health and avoid too much running around. Maniyar told journalists that Modi asked about Pawar’s well-being with great warmth. Pawar, in response, thanked the Prime Minister and said he was resting and that there was no need to worry about the country.

Speculation over merger of both NCP factions: After this conversation, speculation has intensified in Maharashtra over a possible merger of the two factions of the Nationalist Congress Party. In 2023, after Ajit Pawar broke away and joined the BJP-led alliance, the party split into two parts. After Ajit Pawar’s death in January 2026, his wife Sunetra Pawar has been handling key responsibilities in the party. There have been discussions from time to time about unity between the two factions, but no official announcement of any final decision has been made.

Discussion on Supriya Sule entering the Union Cabinet: Union Minister Ramdas Athawale has also indicated that if Supriya Sule joins the NDA, she could get a place in the Union Cabinet in the future. However, this is his political statement, and there has been no official announcement regarding Supriya Sule joining the NDA or entering the Cabinet.

For now, the conversation between the Prime Minister and Sharad Pawar is also being seen as a goodwill gesture related to health. Discussions have certainly intensified in political circles, but the situation is still not clear on the merger of the two NCP factions or any new political alliance.
