CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Morning drool marks on pillow may signal these health problems
Seeing drool marks on the pillow after waking up in the morning is a common experience for many people. If it happens occasionally, it is usually not a cause for concern. But if the problem persists, or is accompanied by loud snoring, difficulty breathing or trouble swallowing, a health issue may be involved. According to experts, there can be several reasons, ranging from sleeping posture to nasal blockage.
A blocked nose, cold, sinus trouble or allergies can make it difficult to breathe through the nose. In such cases, a person may start breathing through the mouth during sleep. Because the mouth remains open, saliva can flow out and fall on the pillow. If the nose remains blocked continuously, it is advisable to consult a doctor. In addition, drooling during sleep may also be a sign of sleep apnea. If symptoms such as loud snoring, gasping during sleep, frequent waking, morning headache or tiredness throughout the day are present, they should not be ignored. In sleep apnea, breathing repeatedly stops during sleep or the airway becomes narrow, which can cause difficulty in breathing.
Sleeping posture can also be a reason for drooling. When a person sleeps on the side or stomach, gravity makes it easier for saliva to come out of the mouth. Apart from this, dental problems, inability to close the mouth properly, or difficulty swallowing saliva can also be causes. The effect of some medicines may also increase saliva production. To avoid this problem, proper treatment should be taken for nasal blockage or allergies, and a change in sleeping posture can be tried. Sleeping with the head in a comfortable position may also help. If drooling is accompanied by loud snoring or symptoms such as pauses in breathing during sleep, medical examination is necessary. Also, no medicine should be stopped without medical advice, and sleeping with tape over the mouth should not be tried.
When is it necessary to see a doctor? If saliva comes out daily in large amounts, there is difficulty in swallowing, or the problem has started suddenly, seek medical advice. If one side of the face suddenly starts drooping, there is difficulty speaking, or weakness appears on one side of the body, seek emergency medical help immediately. Remember that drool marks on the pillow by themselves do not confirm any serious disease. The correct cause can be identified only through symptoms and, when needed, medical examination.
