CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A woman’s kidneys suddenly deteriorated severely after delivery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi. Her condition began worsening rapidly and her creatinine level reached around 7.0 mg/dL. Her platelets and haemoglobin also fell significantly. In view of the situation, doctors had to perform emergency dialysis.
During the investigation, doctors conducted several tests and also ordered genetic testing. The woman was diagnosed with atypical haemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS). It is a rare disease in which small blood vessels can be damaged and the kidneys can be severely affected.
After identifying the disease, doctors began targeted treatment with Eculizumab. The drug helps block the C5 protein and control the activity of the complement system that can damage blood vessels. After treatment, the woman’s platelets and haemoglobin improved, and her kidney function also began to recover.
Following treatment, the woman’s creatinine level came down to around 1.4 mg/dL and she did not require dialysis again. According to doctors, symptoms after childbirth such as reduced urination, sudden swelling, extreme weakness, breathlessness or low platelet count should not be dismissed as normal weakness. Immediate medical evaluation is necessary in such situations.
