MP Scraps Two-Child Rule For Government Jobs
CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India ePress/ITDC News Bhopal: In a significant policy reversal, the Madhya Pradesh government has decided to withdraw the controversial two-child norm linked to government employment. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav directed officials to remove the draft provision that would have made candidates with more than two children ineligible for government jobs and departmental appointments. He also ordered the immediate removal of the proposal from the state's official portal.
The proposed amendment was part of the draft Madhya Pradesh Civil Services Rules and had generated considerable debate. Under the provision, individuals with more than two living children born after January 26, 2001, could have been disqualified from government recruitment. The rule would also have affected serving employees, as having more than two children was categorized as misconduct under service conduct regulations.
The two-child norm had been in force in various forms since 2001 as part of population-control measures. However, employee organizations and several stakeholders had argued that the provision had become outdated and created unnecessary hardships for families. Following a review, the state government decided to withdraw the restriction and prepare a revised draft for public consultation.
The decision is expected to benefit thousands of government job aspirants and employees across the state by removing a long-standing eligibility barrier. Officials have indicated that updated service rules will be published after incorporating public feedback and completing the required administrative process.
