CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Mumbai Indians name Kieron Pollard head coach before IPL 2027

Bhopal/Mumbai. Ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027, Mumbai Indians have made a major change in their coaching staff. The franchise has appointed former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard as the team’s new head coach. He will take over the responsibility from former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene. Pollard was earlier working as Mumbai Indians’ batting coach.

From player to coach

Pollard’s association with Mumbai Indians is nearly 16 years old. He joined the franchise at the age of 22 and remained an important part of the team’s successful phase. As a player, he was associated with Mumbai Indians during the team’s five IPL title wins – 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. Later, he served as batting coach. Now, as head coach, he will be responsible for the team’s strategy, player development and on-field performance.

What did Nita Ambani say?

Mumbai Indians co-owner Nita M. Ambani expressed happiness over Pollard’s appointment. She said Pollard has been an integral part of the franchise family for the past 16 years. As a player, he gave many memorable moments and, as a coach, has shared his experience, passion and understanding of the game with the team. Nita Ambani expressed confidence that Pollard would work in the new role with the same commitment and determination. She wished him well to lead the team’s next chapter.

Franchise parts ways with Jayawardene

Mumbai Indians had earlier announced on 17 October that Mahela Jayawardene had stepped down as head coach. Under Jayawardene’s leadership, the team won three IPL titles in his first stint. The franchise has now shown faith in Pollard, choosing leadership from within the team.
