CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Mumbai locals halted 10 hours after three bodies found on tracks; passengers had to walk along the tracks
Mumbai. The local train service, known as Mumbai’s lifeline, was affected for nearly 10 hours due to a serious disruption. Passengers faced major difficulties during this period. As trains stopped at several places, passengers had to get down on the tracks and walk. The incident has raised questions over Mumbai’s suburban rail system and passenger safety.
According to information, railway operations were affected after three bodies were found on the railway tracks in the Kanjurmarg area. At the same time, a fault in the signal system between Vikhroli and Thane disrupted train movement. Because of these incidents, local services could not operate normally and several trains ran late.
Office-goers, students and other passengers faced considerable trouble as trains remained halted for a long time. Some passengers had to get off the train and walk along the tracks to reach their destinations. The presence of passengers on railway tracks also increased safety risks.
Railways made efforts to fix the technical fault in the signalling system and restore services. However, passengers had to wait for a long time until operations returned to normal.
Lakhs of people travel by local trains in Mumbai every day. In such a situation, a prolonged disruption in services affects the daily activities of the entire city. The incident has raised serious questions about maintenance of the railway signalling system and arrangements for safely evacuating passengers during emergencies.
