CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A mechanic who runs a small mobile repair shop in Mumbai’s Cotton Green area has received a notice from the GST and Income Tax departments over an alleged tax liability of about Rs 31.80 crore.

Mechanic Mahendra Mhapankar has alleged that his identity documents were allegedly misused to open a company in his name and carry out major financial transactions through it. After the matter came to light, Mhapankar approached the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police. Based on his complaint, a case has been registered at Kalachowki police station against Sanjay Tambe, his acquaintance Subhan Qureshi and others. Further investigation in the case has been handed over to the EOW.

According to the complaint, Mhapankar came in contact with Tambe during the Covid-19 pandemic. Later, his documents were allegedly taken on the pretext of starting a business. It is alleged that, using these documents, a company named Galaxy Traders and bank accounts were opened in his name. Large financial and export-related transactions were allegedly carried out through the company.

Mhapankar said that when he received a notice from the Income Tax Department for a tax liability of about Rs 31.80 crore, he obtained documents from the departments concerned and the details of the case came to light. The complaint also alleges that after he objected to the transactions, he was allegedly threatened with death.

Police have registered a case under sections related to criminal breach of trust, cheating, criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy. The Economic Offences Wing is currently investigating the alleged financial transactions and misuse of documents.
