CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: Mumbai. Mumbai’s air pollution situation has drawn attention in October 2026. Delhi is generally known for severe pollution, but this time, on some days, Mumbai’s air was recorded as even more polluted than Delhi’s. The change has raised questions about the city’s air quality and the role of sea winds. According to experts, Mumbai’s geographical location gives it the benefit of winds coming from the sea, but this natural protection does not always remain effective under changing weather conditions.

Why are sea winds important? Mumbai is a city located along the sea. Winds coming from the sea help disperse pollutants and reduce their accumulation in the air. Under normal conditions, the flow of sea breeze helps move polluted air present over the city onward.

However, when wind speed weakens or its normal flow is affected, dust and other pollutants can remain in the same area for a longer period. In such a situation, the natural ventilation from the sea does not provide the expected relief.

Weather conditions increased the challenge. Changes in wind direction, speed, temperature and atmospheric stability in October can affect pollution levels. Due to low wind speed, pollutants emitted by vehicles, construction activities and industrial units begin to accumulate in the atmosphere.

In addition, local activities such as road dust, construction work, traffic and waste burning also affect air quality. If weather conditions prevent pollutants from dispersing, the combined impact of these sources can become more visible.

The difference between pollution in Delhi and Mumbai: In Delhi, several factors are responsible for rising pollution, including the onset of winter, low wind speed, temperature changes and pollutants coming from surrounding areas. In Mumbai, despite sea winds, local emissions and weather-related conditions can increase pollution.

When comparing pollution in the two cities, it is necessary to look at the air quality index (AQI) on the same day, monitoring stations and weather conditions. Mumbai’s AQI being higher than Delhi’s on some days indicates that being located by the sea does not guarantee complete protection from pollution.

Need for a lasting solution: To improve air quality in Mumbai, dust control at construction sites, regular cleaning of roads, reduction in vehicular emissions and monitoring of industrial pollution are necessary. Along with this, pollution levels must be assessed according to weather conditions and control measures implemented in time.

The pollution levels in October have made it clear that sea winds are certainly a natural relief for Mumbai, but they are not an alternative to pollution control. Effective action on sources of emissions is necessary to keep the city’s air clean.
