CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Mumbai prepares for water crisis, each ward gets Rs 30 lakh
Mumbai. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has begun preparations to tackle water shortages during the summer in Mumbai and to make better use of water resources. Under this, Rs 30 lakh has been allocated to each ward for repairing wells in different wards of the city and making them fit for use. The objective of the initiative is to conserve available water sources and strengthen alternative water arrangements in times of need.
Focus will be on repairing wells. The use of many wells in the city has declined over a long period. Due to lack of maintenance, accumulation of silt and other reasons, some wells are no longer fit for use. Through repair and cleaning, efforts will be made to bring such water sources back into use. This could help increase water availability at the local level.
Each ward will receive funds. The BMC has made a provision of Rs 30 lakh for each ward. This amount will be used for assessing the condition of wells, carrying out necessary repairs and related works. The priority of works will be decided on the basis of local needs and the condition of available water sources.
An initiative towards water conservation. In a large metropolis such as Mumbai, amid a growing population and rising demand for water, conservation of alternative water sources is important. Repairing wells could promote the use of groundwater resources. However, regular testing of water quality and proper maintenance of wells will also be necessary so that the available water remains safe for use.
The BMC’s initiative is expected to help provide additional options at the local level during a water crisis. The actual impact of the plan will depend on the quality of repair works, the condition of water sources and regular monitoring.
