CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Mumbai prepares for water crisis, Rs 30 lakh for every ward
Mumbai. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has begun preparations to deal with water shortages during the summer in Mumbai and to make better use of water resources. Under this, Rs 30 lakh has been allocated to each ward for repairing wells in different wards of the city and making them fit for use. The aim of the initiative is to conserve available water sources and strengthen alternative water arrangements in times of need.
Focus will be on repairing wells. The use of existing wells in the city has reduced in many places over a long period. Due to lack of maintenance, accumulation of silt and other reasons, some wells are no longer fit for use. Efforts will be made to bring such water sources back into use through repair and cleaning. This may help increase water availability at the local level.
Each ward will receive funds. The BMC has made a provision of Rs 30 lakh for each ward. This amount can be used for assessing the condition of wells, carrying out necessary repairs and related work. The priority of the works will be decided on the basis of local needs and the condition of available water sources.
An initiative towards water conservation. In a large metropolis such as Mumbai, amid a growing population and rising demand for water, conserving alternative water sources is important. Repairing wells can promote the use of groundwater resources. However, regular testing of water quality and proper maintenance of wells will also be necessary so that the available water remains safe for use.
The BMC’s initiative is expected to help provide additional local-level options during a water crisis. The actual impact of the plan will depend on the quality of repair work, the condition of water sources and regular monitoring.
