CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal / Mumbai : After several days of intense rainfall, Mumbai received sunlight on Thursday, providing some respite to residents. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert in parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Pune, Satara, Thane, and Nashik. Meanwhile, other areas like Washim, Parbhani, and Chandrapur remain free from alerts.
The city experienced a staggering 447mm of rain over 48 hours, with the eastern suburbs receiving 346mm. Areas like Kurla and neighborhoods along LBS Marg faced severe waterlogging, causing disruptions in traffic and daily life.
According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data recorded at 6 AM on Thursday, the seven main water supply lakes in Mumbai are nearing full capacity, with current water reserves standing at 95.17%. This provides a silver lining amid the heavy downpour, ensuring sufficient water supply for the coming days.
Tragically, the incessant rainfall caused casualties in other parts of Maharashtra. In Gadchiroli, the headmaster of a Zilla Parishad school, Vasant Talande, was swept away while crossing an overflowing nullah and was later found dead. Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and follow weather advisories as rivers and drains remain swollen in several districts.
While rainfall has reduced significantly in Mumbai since Wednesday, residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and take preventive measures.
