New Delhi: The Crime Branch of Delhi Police has arrested a 62-year-old accused who had been absconding for 26 years in a murder case. The accused has been identified as Vishwanath Singh alias Munna. He is accused of killing his 24-year-old neighbour Jai Prakash in 1998 by striking him with a hammer. The arrest was made on October 30 from the Shiv Vihar area of north-east Delhi.
According to police, on October 20, 1998, Jai Prakash was found seriously injured and unconscious in the Gokalpuri area. He died during treatment. Initially, police treated the incident as a road accident and registered a case of negligent driving. However, later investigation raised suspicion of murder.
Investigators said the accused had allegedly attacked Jai Prakash on the head with a hammer and tried to make the incident appear to be a road accident. Police claim the accused suspected alleged relations between his wife and Jai Prakash. After this, the initial FIR related to the accident was cancelled and a murder case was registered in 2000.
The accused was declared an absconder by a court on December 5, 2001. Since then, he had been repeatedly changing locations to evade arrest. According to police, he lived at different places in Delhi, Faridabad, Loni and Etawah in Uttar Pradesh, and remained associated with the wholesale mawa business.
The Crime Branch gathered clues through his ancestral village and relatives living in Delhi. During surveillance, police identified him and finally arrested him. Further legal action is now being taken against the accused.
