Bangkok. At least 49 people were killed and 58 injured in a military airstrike near a market in western Myanmar’s Rakhine state on Monday. The condition of 22 of those injured in the attack is reported to be critical. The strike took place in the Kyauktaw area, which is under the control of the Arakan Army.
According to the Arakan Army, a fighter jet dropped two bombs near a local market in the afternoon. Reports said market shopkeepers, shoppers and passers-by were among those killed. A senior rescue official in the area also confirmed the number of dead and injured, citing rescue workers.
After the attack, images emerged showing damage to several buildings and vehicles in the area. However, these images and all details related to the attack could not be independently verified. Myanmar’s military did not immediately respond. The army has previously said its airstrikes target legitimate military positions and has accused armed resistance groups of terrorism.
Conflict has continued in Myanmar since the military coup in February 2021. In Rakhine state, the Arakan Army and the military regime have been fighting for a long time. The conflict has also led to displacement, restrictions on trade and a food crisis in the region.
