CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Veteran actor Nana Patekar died at the age of 75 on October 8 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Goa. According to doctors, CPR was administered to him for around 45 minutes, but his condition did not improve. The hospital said the exact cause of death may become clear after the postmortem.

CPR, or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, is an emergency procedure used when a person suddenly becomes unconscious and is not breathing normally. Its purpose is to maintain blood flow to the body, especially the brain, through chest compressions until medical help or an AED becomes available.

When giving CPR to an adult, the person should be placed on a flat, firm surface and fast, continuous pressure should be applied with both hands at the centre of the chest. Compressions of about 5-6 centimetres at a rate of 100-120 per minute are advised. A trained person may give 2 rescue breaths after 30 compressions; if untrained, continuing chest compressions alone can also help. In cardiac arrest, every minute is critical, so emergency medical assistance must be called immediately and an AED should be used if available. CPR does not guarantee that a person will be saved, but when started in time it can increase the chances of survival.
