Mumbai. Veteran actor Nana Patekar will be cremated with full state honours. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief over his death, spoke by phone with his son Malhar Patekar and assured the family of all possible government assistance. Fadnavis said Nana Patekar’s death was a major loss for Indian cinema and Maharashtra.
Nana Patekar died on Thursday morning at the age of 75 at his residence in Goa. He was taken to Manipal Hospital after his health suddenly deteriorated, where doctors tried to save him for about 45 minutes. According to the hospital, he died of a heart attack.
The Maharashtra government has decided to accord this honour in view of Nana Patekar’s long and significant contribution to Marathi theatre as well as Marathi and Hindi cinema. In a career spanning nearly five decades, he played many memorable roles and received several honours, including three National Film Awards and the Padma Shri.
Chief Minister Fadnavis also recalled Nana Patekar’s social work. He said the actor worked through the Naam Foundation for water conservation and to help villagers in drought-affected areas of Maharashtra. Preparations for Nana Patekar’s cremation are being made at his farmhouse in Donje, Pune.
