CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Scientists are continuing to work on developing better antivenom to prevent deaths caused by the venomous bite of the king cobra. Recent research is looking at nanobody-based antivenom as a potential new technology against snake venom.

Nanobodies are extremely small antibody-like proteins that can be developed to identify toxic proteins and neutralize them. The venom of the king cobra, or Ophiophagus hannah, contains several types of toxic proteins, with neurotoxins being among the most significant. These can affect the body’s nervous system and, in severe cases, cause life-threatening problems such as difficulty in breathing.

Scientists aim to prepare antivenoms that can neutralize different toxic components more precisely than traditional treatment. In recent studies, some nanobody combinations have shown effective results against the venom of several snakes, although further testing is necessary before they can be made available for wider human treatment.

According to experts, this research could prove to be an important step towards developing lower-cost, broader and better-targeted antivenoms in the future. However, in cases of snakebite, people should not depend on experimental measures and must seek immediate medical assistance.
