CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Narayana Health City, Bengaluru, has highlighted 136 heart and lung transplants performed at its centre, celebrating the recovery journeys of patients and the role of advanced transplant care in offering new possibilities to people with end-stage cardiac and pulmonary diseases. The event was organised ahead of World Heart Day on September 29.

More than 40 heart and lung transplant recipients and their families came together to mark their journeys and recognise the contribution of medical teams, donors and families. Narayana Health said its transplant programme covers complex adult and paediatric heart and lung procedures, supported by specialised surgery, critical care and multidisciplinary expertise.

According to Narayana Health, 95% of its transplant recipients have returned to meaningful lives, with some children resuming education and other recipients returning to sports and everyday activities. The programme has also recorded long-term survivors, including a heart transplant recipient who has completed 16 years after transplantation.

The programme has treated patients across different age groups. Narayana Health cited the case of a child who received a donor heart at 14 months and another patient who underwent a combined heart-lung transplant at the age of 68 and continues to live actively. The centre has also performed complex combined heart and lung procedures requiring coordination among multiple specialist teams.

For critically ill patients awaiting transplantation, the centre uses technologies including Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) and Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs) to provide life-sustaining support to selected patients with severe cardiac or respiratory failure.

The transplant programme has also attracted patients from across India. Nearly half of the 136 recipients have travelled from outside Karnataka, representing 19 Indian states, while international patients, including recipients from Sudan, have also received treatment.

Alongside celebrating transplant survivors, Narayana Health emphasised the continuing shortage of donor organs in India. The hospital encouraged greater awareness of deceased organ donation and donor registration, noting that each donation can provide another patient with the possibility of a second chance at life.
