CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: NASA and IBM have launched the NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model to give new momentum to scientific research on the Moon. The open-source AI model will analyse decades of data related to the lunar surface and help scientists better understand its geographical and geological features. The model has been made publicly available so researchers can use and develop it according to their needs.
The AI model has been trained on vast data received from several space missions, including NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). It has the capability to interpret images of the lunar surface, elevation, radar and other scientific information together. This will help scientists carry out tasks such as crater identification, the study of volcanic structures and the detection of potential ice-bearing regions more quickly.
In tests by NASA and IBM, the model performed better than existing AI methods in several tasks. In identifying potential lunar ice, it reduced errors by about 23 percent, while it also produced better results in crater detection.
Ice present in the Moon’s polar regions is considered important for future missions because water can provide resources needed for oxygen and rocket fuel. In this context, the AI model could prove useful for future crewed lunar exploration and plans for a long-term presence on the Moon.
