CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: On the third day of the 21-day National Workshop on Sanskrit Rupaka Direction, organised by the Natya Shastra Study and Research Centre of Central Sanskrit University, Bhopal campus, participants received theoretical and practical training in musicology and the acting tradition of Koodiyattam during the first and second sessions.

In the first session on the third day, subject expert Prof. Ramkumar Sharma, who came from Jaipur, delivered a lecture on various dimensions of musicology. Speaking in detail on the Indian music tradition, swara, shruti, saptak, gram, murchhana, jati, raga, tala and the role of music in Natya Shastra, he said music is a key basis for rasa realisation and emotional expression in the successful staging of Sanskrit plays. He explained the theoretical and practical aspects of music with examples and also addressed participants’ queries.

In the second session, Koodiyattam expert V. Girishan (Sopanam), who came from Kerala, introduced participants to the ancient acting tradition of Koodiyattam. While providing theoretical and practical training in chari and hand gestures, he said body movements, hand gestures, eye acting and emotional expression hold an extremely important place in Koodiyattam. He demonstrated various charis and gestures, explained their use and utility in dramatic acting, and also conducted practical exercises with the participants.

Both sessions were highly informative and useful. Under the guidance of the experts, participants studied various dimensions of music and acting in depth and, through the workshop, received an opportunity to closely understand the rich artistic heritage of the Sanskrit theatre tradition.
