CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: In view of a possible future confrontation with Russia, NATO’s European members are working to strengthen their military preparedness and defence capabilities. Amid the Ukraine war and the changing security environment in Europe, several NATO countries have accelerated plans to increase defence budgets and modernise military structures. In 2025, NATO had pledged to raise defence and security-related spending to 5 percent of GDP by 2035. This includes a provision to spend at least 3.5 percent on core defence needs and 1.5 percent on defence-related infrastructure, cyber security and other areas.
According to NATO, European allies and Canada invested more than $139 billion extra in 2025 on core defence needs compared with the previous year. At the Ankara summit in July, member countries also announced new defence purchases worth more than $50 billion. Special attention is being given in defence preparedness to areas such as drones, missiles, air and missile defence, cyber security and long-range strike capability. According to a Reuters report, lessons from the Ukraine war have also prompted NATO countries to review their capabilities in drones and modern warfare technology.
Pressure from the United States on European countries to take greater responsibility for defence has also increased. According to NATO, the aim is to make Europe more capable in its conventional defence capabilities, while the United States also manages its military responsibilities at the global level.
