CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Bhopal: Various activities were organised by the Science Club at ICMR-Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) on the occasion of World Environment Day. Tree plantation was carried out at Health Centre No. 7, BMHRC Sarai, the BMHRC Bal Udyan and the paramedical institute campus. More than 50 saplings were planted during the drive, mainly peepal, neem, banyan and gular.
A lecture was also organised on the theme of nature-based solutions for environmental protection. Director of ICMR-National Institute for Research in Environmental Health (ICMR-NIREH), Dr Rajnarayan Tiwari, was the chief speaker at the programme.
Addressing BMHRC students, researchers and employees, Tiwari said that large-scale adoption of nature-based solutions is the need of the hour to deal with climate change, biodiversity loss and growing environmental challenges. He said tree plantation alone is not enough, and that efforts should be made for conservation and restoration in line with local biodiversity and natural ecosystems. He described forests, wetlands, peatlands, agroforestry, water management and green infrastructure as effective tools to reduce the impact of climate change.

Tiwari said nature-based solutions are not limited to environmental protection, but also make an important contribution to water security, food security, livelihood enhancement and human health. He said that in view of the increasing incidence of natural disasters, special attention is needed on conservation and restoration of ecosystems. Calling participation of local communities an essential condition for the success of nature-based solutions, he said the interests and involvement of local people should be given priority in any conservation initiative.
Presiding over the programme, BMHRC in-charge Director Manisha Srivastava said environmental balance is being continuously affected, and its adverse effects are now visible in incidents such as storms, floods and landslides. Highlighting the important role of research in environmental conservation, she said that if the environment is protected today, future generations can be given a safe future. Future generations, she said, will certainly ask why adequate steps for environmental protection were not taken in time. Srivastava added that the green environment of the BMHRC campus is better than many other parts of the city, due to which the temperature there also remains comparatively lower.
Apart from this, patients, their attendants and employees at the health centre in Karond were made aware of environmental protection. They were encouraged to maintain environmental balance, promote tree plantation and adopt eco-friendly behaviour in daily life.
