CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal:  A massive car rally was organized in Navi Mumbai on Saturday demanding that the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport be named after late farmer leader D. B. Patil. The rally, which witnessed participation from thousands of vehicles, was led by local leaders, farmer organizations, and residents who hailed Patil’s contribution to the region and the struggles of displaced villagers during land acquisition for various infrastructure projects.

The demonstrators argued that D. B. Patil had relentlessly fought for the rights of farmers and project-affected families, making him the rightful choice for the airport’s name. The rally, which moved through key stretches of Navi Mumbai, caused significant traffic congestion but remained peaceful.

Political leaders cutting across party lines extended their support to the demand. They emphasized that naming the international airport after Patil would be a fitting tribute to his legacy and sacrifices for the people of Navi Mumbai and Raigad districts.

The issue of naming the Navi Mumbai International Airport has been contentious for several years. While some sections advocate honoring D. B. Patil, others argue for alternative names. The state government has yet to make a final announcement, but the large-scale mobilization through the car rally has reignited the debate and put pressure on authorities to recognize public sentiment.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport, once operational, is expected to handle millions of passengers annually and significantly ease air traffic from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
