CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi: The Defence Ministry has signed contracts worth ₹53,866.50 crore for the construction of eight next-generation corvettes to strengthen the Indian Navy’s maritime and combat capabilities. The warships will be equipped with modern missiles, weapon systems and advanced sensors. They will be built by two Indian government defence companies.

The Defence Ministry signed the contracts with Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) in New Delhi on November 2. Under the agreement, signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, GRSE will build five warships, while GSL will construct three.

According to the Defence Ministry, the design of these warships will be prepared by the Indian Navy itself. They will then be built by defence public sector shipyards selected through a competitive process. The project is significant for the Indian Navy as it will promote indigenous design and domestic construction capability together.

The corvettes will be fitted with advanced missile, weapon and sensor systems. They will be capable of carrying out various military operations in the air, on the sea surface and underwater. They can be used for action against enemy ships and submarines, coastal security, maritime surveillance and the protection of important trade sea routes.

The project is also expected to boost the country’s defence manufacturing and shipbuilding sectors. According to the Defence Ministry, it could generate about 72 lakh man-days of employment in shipyards and nearly 460 lakh man-days in ancillary industries and the MSME sector over the next 10 years.

The project is being seen as an important step towards strengthening indigenous defence production under Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India.
