NCP MLAs fear poll defeat over funds, appeal to Sunetra Pawar

Mumbai. Discontent among alliance partners over fund allocation has surfaced within Maharashtra’s ruling Mahayuti coalition. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLAs expressed their displeasure before Deputy Chief Minister and party president Sunetra Pawar, alleging that despite being part of the government, their constituencies are not receiving adequate funds for development works. The MLAs warned that if the situation continues, they could face defeat in the upcoming Assembly elections by the same margin of votes by which they had won the previous election.

Allegations against BJP and Shiv Sena: At a meeting held at the Devgiri bungalow in Mumbai on the night of November 3, the MLAs questioned the functioning of ministers linked to the BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. Some MLAs alleged that development works in their areas were not getting approvals and funds from departments controlled by the Shinde faction. A woman MLA from Nashik complained that the NCP was not being taken into confidence on development works related to the Kumbh Mela. A Satara MLA, meanwhile, accused the BJP of ignoring allies and creating difficulties during the Zilla Parishad elections.

Sunetra Pawar heard the complaints: During the meeting, Sunetra Pawar asked the MLAs to place their problems and suggestions instead of making political statements. State president Sunil Tatkare also acknowledged complaints related to the shortage of funds. It was decided at the meeting to restart the Janata Darbar at the party office and to hold weekly meetings with MLAs. Sunetra Pawar said she would take responsibility for raising the issue of funds for development works in the cabinet meeting.

After this meeting, a meeting of the party’s core committee was also held. The displeasure among MLAs has triggered a fresh political discussion within the Mahayuti over coordination among alliance partners and the distribution of development funds.
