CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: India’s double Olympic medalist and javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra confirmed on Tuesday that he will start his 2025 season with the Doha Diamond League meet on May 16 in the capital of Qatar.

Chopra, who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics and silver at the Paris 2024 Olympics, said he is looking forward to competing once again in front of some of the most passionate athletics fans in the world in Doha.

In 2023, Chopra had won at Qatar Sports Club with a world-leading throw of 88.67 meters. Ahead of his third appearance in Doha, he spoke about the overwhelming support he receives from Indian fans in Qatar and said, “I am always touched by the appreciation I get from Indian people in Qatar. I often find myself at a loss for words.”

The 27-year-old Chopra, currently coached by Czech legend and world record holder Jan Železný, has taken Indian athletics to new heights. He became the first Indian track and field athlete to win both Olympic and World Championship gold, and also the first Indian to win a Diamond League title.

However, Chopra faced some challenges last season — he finished second to Arshad Nadeem in the Olympic final and was also runner-up to Anderson Peters in the Diamond League final.

Chopra said, “Last year taught me a lot, but I am proud to have won a medal for India at the Olympics. I am now fully fit and training hard with Jan Železný. I’m eagerly looking forward to opening my season in Doha.”

He added, “The crowd at Qatar Sports Club is always loud and encouraging, and I think that brings out the best in us. I know the fans here have high expectations from me. With the right conditions and great atmosphere, it’s possible. For me, consistency is more important than just chasing a single number. I believe that is my biggest strength.”
