CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A devastating flash flood in Nepal’s northern Rasuwa district has caused widespread destruction along the Bhotekoshi River, leaving several people dead and hundreds missing. The disaster struck near the Nepal-Tibet border on Wednesday, August 26, with powerful floodwaters sweeping through settlements, roads and infrastructure. The situation remains fluid as authorities continue rescue and relief operations.
According to reports, 384 travellers have been reported missing, including 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali citizens. At least 105 Indians are among the missing foreign nationals, raising concerns in India and prompting authorities to coordinate information and assistance for affected families.
The sudden rise in the Bhotekoshi River caused extensive damage in Rasuwa and neighbouring areas. Homes, vehicles, roads, bridges and hydropower facilities have been damaged or swept away. Several major power and transmission installations have also been affected, disrupting infrastructure in the region.
The exact cause of the flash flood is still being investigated. Officials and experts are examining the possibility of an ice-rock avalanche, a glacial event or another sudden blockage and release of water in the Himalayan river system. The possibility of additional flooding has also prompted warnings for people living near riverbanks.
Nepal’s Army, Police and Armed Police Force have been deployed for search-and-rescue operations, using helicopters, drones and specialised teams to reach affected areas and locate missing people. Difficult mountainous terrain and damaged infrastructure are complicating rescue efforts.
The disaster has highlighted the vulnerability of Himalayan communities and infrastructure to sudden extreme events. With rescue operations continuing, authorities remain focused on locating survivors, providing emergency assistance and assessing the full scale of damage.
