CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The severe flood that hit Nepal on August 26 has caused large-scale destruction. Flooding in the Bhotekoshi River has heavily damaged roads, bridges, hydropower projects, homes and public facilities.
According to the government’s latest Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment, around 723.31 billion Nepalese rupees will be required for reconstruction and recovery in the affected areas. Of this, nearly 473.57 billion rupees, or about 75 percent, is estimated to be spent on restoring infrastructure.
The floods have affected 13 hydropower projects with a combined capacity of around 759 megawatts. Roads and dozens of motorable and pedestrian bridges have also been damaged. Around 7,570 private houses have suffered damage. Rebuilding the energy system alone is estimated to cost about 390.62 billion Nepalese rupees.
The government has divided reconstruction into two phases. It has said around 8.73 billion rupees will be needed for relief and initial reconstruction over the next six months, while 714.58 billion rupees will be required for long-term rebuilding.
About 1.6 million people have been affected by the disaster, while the latest figures confirm 1,370 deaths and report 5,130 people missing. Officials said the final cost could change after a detailed post-disaster assessment.
