CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A commerce-related meeting between the customs officials of Nepal and India began on Thursday. The two-day meeting primarily aims to make trade between the two nations more convenient and seamless, while also controlling illegal trade and revenue leakage.
Key points of discussion in the talks include the exchange of advance information related to export trade between the two countries, making cargo tracking systems mandatory for containers transporting import-export goods, and providing prior notice about exports to third countries via India from Nepal, as well as imports from third countries into India.
Narayan Prasad Regmi, spokesperson for Nepal’s Department of Customs, informed media that discussions will also cover the strengthening of quality and quarantine inspection systems at border checkpoints to ensure the quality of imported and exported goods. Additional issues on the agenda include completing the construction of integrated check posts at Bhairahawa and Chandani-Dodhara within the targeted timeline, and facilitating the implementation of quality certification procedures for Nepali exports to India.
The meeting is being led by Mahesh Bhattarai, Director General of the Department of Customs from Nepal, and Abhay Kumar Srivastava, Director General of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence from India. The Indian delegation includes the Additional Director General of the Lucknow Regional Unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, the First Secretary of the Indian Embassy in Nepal, and heads of customs offices from Kolkata, Patna, and Lucknow, among others. The Nepali team includes senior officials from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control, and the Departments of Animal and Plant Quarantine, among others.
