CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New York: Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah expressed gratitude to India and China at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly for helping Nepal after the recent devastating floods. He said both neighbouring countries provided immediate and generous assistance to Nepal. Shah also thanked other countries, United Nations agencies, humanitarian organisations and people around the world for their support.
In his address, Prime Minister Shah raised the issue of growing climate risks in the Himalayan region. He said the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region is a crucial foundation for water, ecology, agriculture and livelihoods for nearly two billion people. According to him, climate change is increasing threats such as melting glaciers, destabilisation of mountain slopes, floods and landslides.
Shah proposed setting up a “Himalayan Climate Resilience Mechanism”, led by Nepal, India and China, to deal with these challenges. Under this framework, he called for the three countries to share satellite data and expertise, monitor dangerous glacial lakes and strengthen early warning systems.
He said climate change does not recognise borders and disasters linked to the Himalayan region can affect more than one country. Therefore, he said, it is necessary to strengthen scientific information, disaster management and early warning systems through regional cooperation.
Shah’s proposal came against the backdrop of the recent devastating floods in Nepal. He also stressed the need for climate justice and international cooperation for disaster-affected countries.
