CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Israel’s election results have triggered a fresh debate over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s political future. With early results giving no alliance a clear majority in parliament, the process of government formation has become complicated. However, falling short of a majority does not mean Netanyahu would have to immediately step down as prime minister. He can continue as caretaker prime minister until a new government is formed.

Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, has 120 seats, and support from 61 lawmakers is generally needed to form a government. According to early estimates, the alliance led by Netanyahu has won about 53 seats, while the opposition alliance is at around 48 seats. Arab parties are estimated to have secured about 19 seats. In this situation, political parties will have to look for new allies and support to form a government. Netanyahu has four possible routes to save his government.

First option: a coalition with new allies. Netanyahu can try to reach the majority mark by bringing other parties on his side. For this, he may have to make policy compromises and agree to the demands of allied parties.

Second option: a national unity government. Netanyahu can try to form a joint government with some opposition leaders. However, many of his opponents have already objected to joining a government under his leadership, so this path will not be easy.

Third option: a minority government. Under the parliamentary process, there may also be a possibility of a government that does not have a permanent majority on every issue but manages to win a confidence vote in the Knesset. External support from other parties or their abstention from voting could be important for this.

Fourth option: another election. If no leader succeeds in forming a government within the stipulated time, fresh elections may eventually become necessary. During this period, Netanyahu can remain in office as caretaker prime minister until a new government is formed.

The final decision will depend on political agreements. Israel’s President Isaac Herzog will consult the parties and then give the opportunity to form a government to the leader who has a better chance of gathering support. After that, the prescribed timeline for building a coalition will apply. Therefore, Netanyahu’s political future will depend not only on his party’s seats but also on his ability to reach agreements with other parties and secure support in parliament. For now, it would be premature to treat any option as the final outcome.
