CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made a major statement on removing Iran’s government from power. He said he has instructed Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and other security agencies to overthrow the Iranian regime. Describing Iran’s nuclear programme as a serious threat to Israel’s security, Netanyahu said regime change is necessary to eliminate that threat.

Allegations over the nuclear programme

Netanyahu alleged that Iran is again trying to develop nuclear weapons. He also accused Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei of carrying forward his father’s policies. According to the Israeli prime minister, if Iran obtains nuclear weapons, it could pose a serious threat to Israel’s existence and security. These claims are part of Netanyahu’s statement; an independent assessment of the current status of Iran’s nuclear programme is a separate matter.

Mention of US support

Referring to US President Donald Trump, Netanyahu claimed the two countries can work together to eliminate the threat arising from Iran. However, any clear official confirmation from the US about joining a new military campaign to remove the Iranian regime needs to be understood separately from Netanyahu’s statement.

Fears of rising regional tension

Netanyahu’s remarks are likely to raise fears of further tension in West Asia. Amid the ongoing confrontation between Iran and Israel, talk of regime change raises new questions about the scope of military action. Experts are also discussing how feasible it would be to bring down a country’s government through air strikes alone. For now, Netanyahu’s statement reflects Israel’s declared policy and strategic objective. Whether there will be regime change in Iran, or whether any new military action will be launched for it, is not yet clear.
