CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Jerusalem. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed concern that a future president of the United States could adopt a hostile position toward Israel. To deal with such a possible situation, he has stressed strengthening ties with other international partners, including India and countries in Latin America. Netanyahu made the remarks while presenting his national security policy ahead of Israel’s parliamentary election scheduled for October 27.
Policy in the United States could change in two years: Netanyahu said that in two years, a president who is highly hostile to Israel could come to power in the United States. He asked how Israel would manage its relations with the United States in such a situation and what other options it would adopt to ensure its security. He said Israel should use the remaining period of US President Donald Trump’s term to strengthen its position. According to him, along with maintaining strong relations with the United States, it is also necessary to develop strategic partnerships with other countries.
India and Latin American countries mentioned: Netanyahu said Israel should build new alliances and that he is working in this direction with regional and other countries. Referring specifically to India, he said India is a large country and strengthening relations with it is important for Israel. He also referred to political changes taking place in Latin America. Israel and India have cooperation in areas such as defence, agriculture, technology, innovation and trade. Netanyahu’s latest statement comes at a time when Israel is discussing a new direction for its security strategy and international partnerships.
Opposition questions security policy: Israeli opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot criticised Netanyahu’s security policy. He alleged that the document presented just before the election was an attempt to send a political message rather than offer a concrete strategy. Eisenkot also questioned why the government took so long to make its policy public despite several security challenges continuing to exist.
Netanyahu’s statement does not deny the importance of Israel’s close relations with the United States, but stresses broadening ties with other countries amid concerns that US policy could change in the future. It will be important to see how Israel implements these proposals in its security policy.
