ITDC INDIA EPRESS/ ITDC NEWS The Gujarat assembly, on Thursday, passed Gujarat Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Bill, 2023.
The bill, recently introduced by Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi, has provision to award a maximum imprisonment of 10 years and fine of Rs 1 crore for indulging in “organised crime” of leaking question papers of government recruitment examinations. The minimum period of imprisonment for the crime is seven years.
The bill also has provisions to attach the properties of the accused and auction it to recover the money earned through unfair means.
In the last couple of years, Gujarat has witnessed a series of paper leaks in examinations to various government posts. In the last leak, the police busted an inter-state gang allegedly involved in the paper leak racket. Several members of the gang are behind the bars.
The problem of paper leaks was one of the key issues raised by the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress ahead of assembly elections.
The bill also has a provision of debarring students involved in such paper leaks for three years.
Those given the duty to conduct examinations and found involved in paper leaks will also have to serve jail terms and pay a fine.
