ITDC INDIA EPRESS/ITDC NEWS R Tamil Nadu’s ruling party, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its alliance partners registered a landslide victory in the 21 corporations, urban and local bodies that went to polls on Saturday. The DMK registered victory in 85 per cent of the wards, even as counting is underway in few wards, on Tuesday.

According to the state election commission, as of 8pm, the results were declared for 1,367 out of 1,374 wards in all the 21 corporations; 3,842 out of 3,843 wards in municipalities and 7,603 out of 7,621 wards in municipalities.

The DMK, which lost to the AIADMK in the 2021 assembly elections in the Western region, captured Coimbatore corporation and all the municipalities and town panchayats in the region. The victory in the region is considered big as AIADMK, under S.P. Velumani, and the BJP had put up a strong fight.

Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam too was focused on the Coimbatore region, hoping to open its account in the corporation.

Overall, the DMK won 85 per cent of the 12,801 wards, which went to polls on February 19.

“I thank the people of Tamil Nadu for the massive victory they have given to us in the local body polls. The results is a recognition of the Dravidian model of governance. We have been working for the people for the past nine months and this victory is a recognition for the work done by us. The results have helped us renew our vigour,” Chief Minister M.K. Stalin told reporters.

The AIADMK won 164 wards in corporations, 638 in municipalities and 1,206 in town panchayats.

The DMK swept the polls in 946 wards in corporations, 2,360 in municipalities and 4,388 wards in town panchayats.

The AIADMK lost in its home bastions, particularly the Kongu region, and also wards in Theni and Edappadi where its leaders O. Panneerselvam and Edappadi K. Palanisami hail from.

The AIADMK blamed the ruling party for bogus voting. “If the elections had been free and fair, the AIADMK would have won comfortably,” Panneerselvam said in a statement.

The DMK’s ally, Congress, finished third, winning 73 wards in corporations, 151 wards in municipalities and 368 wards in the town panchayats.

The BJP which has been trying hard to find space in Tamil Nadu, opened its account in the Chennai corporation with a lone woman councillor, Uma Anandhan, winning from ward number 134.

The BJP has won 22 wards in the corporations, 56 wards in municipalities and 230 in the town panchayats. The saffron party, which got 1.23 percent votes in the 2011 elections, increased its vote share close to 2 per cent in local body polls.
