ITDC INDIA EPRESS/ITDC NEWS R The Congress party's disciplinary committee is scheduled to meet on Friday to take up a complaint against former Punjab party unit chief Navjot Singh Sidhu.
Earlier this week, Harish Chaudhary, the Congress in-charge for Punjab, had written to party chief Sonia Gandhi seeking action against Sidhu for purportedly “trying to portray himself above the party”.
Sidhu, who had been elevated to the post of Punjab Congress chief last year, had been controversial for his frequent clashes with former chief ministers Amarinder Singh and Charanjit Singh Channi. The dissension in the Congress state unit was considered a key factor in the party's humiliating loss in the recent assembly polls.
Tariq Anwar, a member of the Congress disciplinary committee, had told The Tribune on Wednesday “Barring committee chairperson A.K. Antony who is undergoing some treatment in Kerala, all committee members will meet day after [Friday] to discuss the complaint and charges against Mr Sidhu. We will go strictly by the party constitution in deliberating on the issue. We will also take the consent of Mr Antony on the issue before arriving at any conclusion.”
According to reports, the disciplinary committee could issue a notice to Sidhu to seek his response to the accusations against him.
Interestingly, Sidhu appeared to acknowledge the deliberations against him. He tweeted on Wednesday “I often listen to talk against me in silence... I have given the right to reply to time.”
