CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Nine details now mandatory on dentists’ prescriptions; new directives issued

Dentists prescribing medicines to patients for dental treatment will now have to record several important details on their prescriptions. The National Dental Commission (NDC) issued new directives on 23 October 2026, making nine details mandatory for practising dental surgeons across the country. The directives will apply to both handwritten and digital prescriptions. The objective is to provide patients with information about the treating doctor’s identity, qualification and contact details, and to increase transparency in the medical system.

These nine details must be recorded on prescriptions. According to the new directives, every dentist’s prescription must carry the following information:

1. Dentist’s full name: The name registered with the relevant State Dental Council.

2. Registration number: A valid registration number issued by the State Dental Council.

3. Educational qualification: Details of recognised dental degree and specialisation.

4. Full clinic address: The postal address of the workplace, including PIN code.

5. Emergency contact number: An active phone number for patients to contact when needed.

6. Patient information: The patient’s name, age and gender.

7. Prescription date: The date of every visit and issuance of the prescription.

8. Dentist’s signature: A handwritten signature or a legally valid digital signature.

9. Doctor’s stamp: If the name, qualification and registration number are not already printed, a clear and legible stamp carrying these details must be affixed.

Distance from pharma-sponsored prescription pads also advised. The commission has asked dental practitioners to update their prescription pads, letterheads and digital templates in line with the new directives. It has also advised them not to use prescription pads provided, printed or sponsored by pharmaceutical companies. Prescriptions should be issued only on pads or letterheads that conform to the prescribed standards.

How will patients benefit? With these directives, patients will be able to know which doctor is treating them, what the doctor’s educational qualification and registration are, and how the doctor can be contacted when required. The move is also expected to improve identification and accountability in treatment-related documents.
