CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reacted with visible amusement after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha raised concerns in Parliament regarding alleged new conditions imposed by banks. Chadha claimed that certain banks were asking customers for unnecessary documentation and imposing complex requirements, which he said created difficulties for common citizens and small businesses.
During a discussion in the Rajya Sabha, Chadha pointed out these “banking complications” and urged the Finance Ministry to take corrective steps. He alleged that such practices reflect insensitivity towards the needs of the people and could negatively affect financial inclusion.
Sitharaman, in her response, countered the claims with a light tone and stated that while she was “amused” by Chadha’s remarks, they appeared to be exaggerated. She emphasized that the Indian banking system has evolved significantly, especially under the Digital India initiative, and is working towards greater transparency, inclusion, and customer convenience.
The minister also reminded the House that regulatory changes are often made in accordance with global compliance standards and to counter money laundering and fraud. She invited the AAP MP to share specific cases so that they could be looked into, but maintained that no general policy exists to harass customers.
The exchange, while lighthearted on the surface, underlined deeper concerns over banking accessibility, customer experience, and the need for greater communication between citizens and financial institutions. It also highlights the growing role of opposition voices like Chadha in raising everyday economic issues in Parliament, even as the Centre defends its reform narrative.’
