CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Action is set to be tightened against vehicles without valid third-party insurance. The IRDAI is preparing to launch a pilot of the “No Insurance, No Fuel” system in selected cities.
Under the plan, the validity of a vehicle’s insurance will be checked at petrol pumps by scanning its number plate. In the proposed system, ANPR, or Automatic Number Plate Recognition, cameras will be linked with data from the Insurance Information Bureau (IIB) and VAHAN. As soon as a vehicle number is scanned, it will be possible to determine whether it has valid third-party motor insurance. A system to stop the supply of petrol and diesel if there is no insurance will be tested.
The initiative follows the Supreme Court’s directive of August 4, 2026. The court had asked the IRDAI and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to prepare a pilot project under which fuel supply at petrol pumps could be linked to valid insurance. However, the court’s direction was related to preparing a pilot and has not been treated as an order for immediate nationwide implementation.
Third-party motor insurance is already mandatory in India. According to the government, driving a vehicle without valid insurance is a punishable offence.
