CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Scientists have presented significant findings on seismic activity in North Korea’s Mount Mantap area. According to a new study, a total of 1,399 small earthquakes were recorded in the region between 2008 and 2025. Mount Mantap is the same area where North Korea conducted six underground nuclear tests between 2006 and 2017.

According to scientists, seismic activity had been extremely low in this part of the Korean Peninsula over nearly 2,000 years of historical records. The study found that the number of earthquakes increased notably after North Korea’s sixth and largest nuclear test in 2017. The September 2017 test also produced a seismic shock of about magnitude 6.3. Researchers found that after the nuclear test, seismic activity continued to rise for years instead of gradually returning to normal. Most of the recorded earthquakes were small, with many measuring between magnitude 2 and 3. Scientists believe the explosions may have activated pre-existing weak faults within the rocks.

According to the study, the locations of 955 of the 1,399 earthquakes were determined more accurately. Researchers found a concentration of these activities around two possible fault structures. However, the exact reason for the prolonged seismic activity is still not fully clear. Researchers also said no evidence has been found of any new North Korean nuclear test after 2017.
