CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) Department of AIIMS has started manufacturing artificial limbs for the lower part of the body. In a significant step towards improving the lives of individuals without limbs, the first batch of these artificial limbs was distributed to needy patients on July 3, 2024, by the Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, Professor (Dr.) Ajay Singh.
Emphasizing his commitment to empowering disabled individuals, Professor Singh said, “If my efforts can bring even a small change in their lives, it is a great achievement. My aim is to empower such individuals and help them gain proper integration into society.” He mentioned that people lose their limbs due to accidents, diabetes, or peripheral vascular disease. In about 85% of such cases, the lower part of the body needs to be amputated. Talking about the cost of artificial limbs provided by AIIMS Bhopal, Professor Singh said that similar artificial limbs in the market cost around 15,000 to 20,000 rupees, while AIIMS Bhopal provides them for less than 1,000 rupees. This initiative highlights the institute’s commitment to making essential medical equipment accessible to all sections of society.
