CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Delhi: The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) failed to win any of the four central posts in the 2026 Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections. The result has drawn attention to the organisation’s candidate selection, particularly a decision involving NSUI national president Vinod Jakhar.
According to reports, Deepanshu Shokeen was considered a strong contender for an NSUI ticket but was not selected. The organisation instead fielded Vijay Shankar Meena for president, Veer Chhatrath for vice-president, Namrata Chaudhary for secretary and Gopal Chaudhary for joint secretary.
Shokeen subsequently contested the vice-president election as an independent candidate and won the post. The other three central positions went to candidates backed by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
The outcome has led to discussion over whether NSUI’s candidate-selection strategy affected its performance. However, attributing the organisation’s complete result solely to one decision would require evidence beyond the election outcome itself.
Before the elections, Jakhar had publicly defended the NSUI panel, describing it as a strong team and highlighting representation and student-related issues. NSUI had also released a manifesto covering affordable housing, metro concessions, 24-hour libraries, scholarships, examination reforms and student welfare.
