CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Numbness or tingling in the hand while sleeping at night is a common problem. Many times, it happens because of an incorrect sleeping posture or pressure on the hand, and improves after changing position. But if it happens repeatedly, lasts for a long time, or is accompanied by pain and weakness, it should not be ignored. The cause may range from pressure on nerves to health conditions such as diabetes.
What causes hand numbness? Keeping the hand pressed under the body while sleeping or keeping the wrist bent for a long time can put pressure on nerves. This may cause temporary numbness and tingling in the hand. Usually, changing the position of the hand brings relief. Another possible cause is carpal tunnel syndrome. In this condition, pressure is placed on the median nerve inside the wrist, which can cause numbness, tingling or pain in the thumb, index finger and middle finger. In many people, the symptoms are felt more at night. In severe cases, grip strength in the hand may weaken.
There may also be a link with neck nerves and diabetes. Pressure on nerves due to changes in the bones or discs of the neck can send pain and tingling down to the hand. Diabetes-related nerve problems and vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause numbness in the hands and feet. However, no disease can be confirmed on symptoms alone. A medical examination is necessary to identify the correct cause.
When can it be a warning sign? If the hand becomes numb repeatedly, does not feel normal for a long time, or hand strength starts decreasing, a doctor should be consulted. Difficulty holding objects, persistent pain, or tingling spreading from the neck to the hand can also indicate the need for examination. If the hand suddenly becomes numb or weak and one side of the face starts drooping, speech becomes difficult, vision changes or balance is affected, these may be symptoms of a stroke. In such a situation, seek emergency medical help immediately.
Take these preventive steps: Do not keep the hand pressed under the body while sleeping and avoid bending the wrist too much. If the problem occurs repeatedly, a supportive device that keeps the wrist straight at night may be used on medical advice. Avoid taking medicines on your own without examination, and get the cause of persistent symptoms evaluated.
