Both India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) had sought Saurabh’s extradition, but the Omani court rejected the UAE’s petition and approved India’s request. The decision has cleared the way for Saurabh to be brought to India.
During the hearing in the case, Saurabh told the court that he was a citizen of Vanuatu. Citing his citizenship, he presented his side in the extradition process. However, after considering the available facts and legal aspects, the court accepted India’s extradition request.
Because India and the UAE had made separate extradition requests, the case had become part of an international legal process. After considering the requests of both countries, the Omani court ruled in India’s favour.
The decision is being seen as an important diplomatic and legal achievement for India. However, the full status of the developments will become clear only after details emerge on the further process of bringing Saurabh to India, the date of his handover and the related formalities.
