CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies, Bhopal: In Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s government is facing a political challenge from within his own party, the National Conference. About 25 dissident MLAs of the party have given the leadership a 14-day ultimatum, warning that they could withdraw support from the government if their demands are not met. The development has intensified political activity in the region.
According to reports, the main demand of the disgruntled MLAs is a broad reshuffle of the existing council of ministers. They are demanding that all current ministers be removed from their departments and a new council of ministers be formed. A demand has also been raised for the removal of the Chief Minister’s political adviser Nasir Aslam Wani from his post.
The MLAs say the entire legislature party should be consulted on the appointment of ministers and allocation of departments. They allege that important decisions in the party are being taken at the level of a limited group of people. They are demanding that new responsibilities be decided on the basis of merit and transparency. The dissident group has also demanded that the promises made in the party’s election manifesto, including restoration of Articles 370 and 35A, be pursued firmly. The MLAs have warned that if concrete action is not taken on their demands within 14 days, they could go to Raj Bhavan and begin the process of withdrawing their support from the government.
Meanwhile, Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi’s announcement that he will resign from the party and his Lok Sabha membership on November 3 has also added to the difficulties of the National Conference. The party leadership now faces the challenge of addressing internal dissent and maintaining the stability of the government.
The National Conference has 41 MLAs in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. If 25 MLAs actually withdraw support, it could have a serious impact on the government’s majority. However, for now, the development is based on the warning and demands made by the dissident MLAs.
