Onion prices rise 82% in three months as supplies shrink

CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Onion prices in the country have risen sharply over the past few months. According to government data, the average retail price of onions was around ₹29.50 per kg on June 1, 2026, rising to ₹53.78 per kg by September 17. This marked an 82.3% increase in retail prices in about three and a half months.

Onion prices have also increased sharply in the wholesale market. The average wholesale price was around ₹22.60 per kg on June 1, rising to ₹46.20 on September 10 and ₹45.68 per kg on September 17. According to market reports, damage to the summer onion crop in Maharashtra and reduced arrivals in mandis have increased pressure on prices.

Reduced supply from Maharashtra and Karnataka, along with a delay in arrivals of the new kharif crop, is also being cited as a reason for the price rise. In some parts of Karnataka, delayed monsoon rains affected onion sowing, raising the possibility that arrivals of the local new crop in markets may be pushed to October.

The government is making onions available from buffer stocks at ₹35 per kg, but retail prices in several markets remain much higher. According to experts, prices may see some relief from November after arrivals of the new kharif crop increase.
