CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: OpenAI, which built its identity in the world of artificial intelligence through ChatGPT, is now preparing to expand its presence in the hardware sector. The company is developing several AI-based devices, including a smart speaker equipped with a camera and sensors. According to media reports, the team of former Apple design chief Jony Ive is also involved in the project. The company’s aim is to make AI a part of everyday life, rather than keeping it limited to mobile phones and computers.
According to reports, OpenAI’s first hardware product could be a screenless smart speaker. It is expected to include a camera, microphones and other sensors, helping the device understand its surroundings and respond to users according to context. It may also be designed so it can be easily moved between different rooms in a home. However, the company has not yet officially announced all its features.
The main attraction of the smart speaker could be ChatGPT-based voice interaction. Users would be able to ask questions by voice, obtain information and receive help with everyday tasks. According to reports, the device could also help control smart home appliances, play media and assist with message-related tasks.
Apart from the smart speaker, OpenAI’s possible hardware portfolio is also being discussed as including smart glasses, smart lamps and other AI devices. However, these products may be developed in different phases, and no date has been fixed for their market launch. The company’s long-term plan is said to involve developing devices in which AI can understand the user’s surroundings and provide more useful assistance.
According to media reports, OpenAI could unveil its smart speaker in 2026, while sales are not expected to begin before February 2027. Initial reports had suggested a possible price of $200 to $300, while later reports mentioned discussions around a price of $300 to $400. The actual price and launch date will become clear only after an official announcement by the company.
Privacy and data security will also be important issues for a home AI device equipped with cameras and microphones. Users will need to know what data the device collects, how it is used, and what options are available to switch off the camera or microphone.
