CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Opposition parties have intensified their demand for action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar after reports of alleged differences within the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision, or SIR. The Opposition has asked Parliament to begin the process of removing him from office. The reaction came after a report claimed that two other election commissioners had recorded written objections 14 times over the past 10 months against decisions taken by the Commission.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh alleged that these developments raise serious questions about the credibility and impartiality of the Election Commission. Congress MP Manish Tewari said that if the facts in the report are correct and rules were not followed, the entire matter needs to be investigated.
CPI(M) MP John Brittas demanded that Parliament immediately begin the process of removing Gyanesh Kumar. He claimed that the objections raised by two members of the Election Commission were linked to SIR, the addition and deletion of names in the voter list, and other procedural decisions.
RJD MP Manoj Jha also demanded the CEC’s resignation. Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh, meanwhile, made serious allegations over the SIR process and decisions related to the voter list. On the other hand, Election Commission sources denied reports of internal differences, saying that all decisions, including those related to SIR, were taken unanimously with the approval of all three election commissioners.
Notably, the Opposition had earlier also given notices seeking Gyanesh Kumar’s removal. In April 2026, such proposals were not accepted at the level of the Lok Sabha Speaker and the Rajya Sabha Chairman.
