Ordinary students can also contest DUSU polls: Know the rules

CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: In the Delhi University Students’ Union, or DUSU, elections, it is not only candidates from student organisations who can contest. Under university rules, any regular student who fulfils the eligibility criteria can file a nomination. In the 2026 elections too, apart from various student organisations, candidates contesting independently are in the fray.

To contest the DUSU elections, a candidate must be a regular student. Students enrolled in correspondence courses cannot contest. Under the existing rules, undergraduate candidates must be between 17 and 22 years of age, while the maximum age for postgraduate candidates is 25 years.

Academic record is also important. According to the available election rules of Delhi University, students who failed in the previous academic year or have taken readmission in the current academic year are not eligible to contest.

During nomination, candidates have to submit the prescribed documents, an affidavit and other necessary papers. First-year students who have not yet received their ID cards can file nominations with the prescribed alternative documents.

This means membership of a party or student organisation is not mandatory to enter the DUSU elections, but all eligibility conditions laid down by the university must be fulfilled.
