CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Engineering Department of the railways is utilizing cutting-edge technology to expand its facilities, leading to progressive improvements in rail operations and safety. In this effort, West Central Railway is implementing new technology across various rail sections to increase train speeds.
Under the guidance of General Manager Shobhana Bandyopadhyay, various infrastructure projects aimed at increasing speeds are being executed on time. Among these initiatives, the installation of Thick Web Switch Point Machines is being rapidly carried out across all three divisions. This work is being accomplished through the collective efforts of the Railway’s Engineering, Signal and Telecommunications, Operations, and Electrical Departments.
In the first four months of the current financial year, from April to July, West Central Railway installed 154 Thick Web Switches at various rail yards and turnout locations. In July alone, 14 Thick Web Switches were installed, with 9 in the Jabalpur division, 2 in the Bhopal division, and 3 in the Kota division.
It is noteworthy that the installation of Thick Web Switches will enhance both the speed and safety of trains. Traditionally, turnouts used conventional switches to change the direction of trains, but now the installation of Thick Web Switches is progressing rapidly. The primary objective of installing these switches is to enable trains to reach speeds of up to 130 km/h, which can be increased to 160 km/h in the future. Additionally, this will allow trains on loop lines to increase their speed from 30 km/h to 50 km/h. Moreover, the use of this new technology reduces vibrations during train operations.
Key Features of Thick Web Switches:
Thick Web Switches enhance track safety and extend the lifespan of the tracks.
The use of this new technology significantly reduces turnout-related failures.
Maintenance costs are lower compared to previous systems.
Estimated track speeds can be increased.
Compared to conventional points, the modern system of Thick Web Switches is highly reliable.
West Central Railway is making commendable efforts in utilizing digital systems and new technologies. The railway is progressing towards the use of high-tech systems, advancing into the future.
